Ecosia Browser
Browse the web while funding reforestation. Ecosia's free Chromium browser blocks trackers by default and plants trees with every search you make.
Ecosia Browser is a free Chromium-based browser from Berlin that turns your everyday browsing into climate action. Every search generates ad revenue, and Ecosia puts that money toward planting trees. Over 230 million trees funded so far.
Privacy comes built in. The browser blocks trackers and ads from the start, and includes fingerprinting protection to stop sites from identifying your browser across sessions. Cookie consent popups get handled automatically, rejecting non-essential cookies without you lifting a finger. Your IP address and search data are anonymized within 7 days. Ecosia does not build personal profiles or sell your data.
It runs on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Since it is built on Chromium, most Chrome extensions work without issues. There is also an AI Chat with a "Green Mode" for environmentally focused answers, and EcoLinks that flag sustainable product alternatives when you shop online.
Worth knowing
Search results come from Microsoft Bing, so your queries pass through Bing's servers. That works fine for most searches, but niche or very specific queries can produce weaker results than Google. The browser is not open source, so you cannot inspect the full codebase yourself. Ecosia publishes monthly financial and ecological reports showing exactly where the money goes. The share of revenue directed to tree planting has dropped to around 25% in recent years as the company expanded into renewable energy and other climate projects.
