What Data We Collect and Why

Website Analytics

We use Plausible Analytics (an EU-based, privacy-focused analytics service) to understand how our website is used. This service:

  • Collects only anonymous, aggregated data
  • Does not use cookies
  • Does not track individual users
  • Does not collect personal information
  • Helps us improve the website experience

Legal basis: Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) in understanding website usage patterns to improve our services. Since Plausible collects no personal data or cookies, the impact on your privacy is minimal.

Language Preference Cookie

When you change the language on our website, we store this preference in a cookie to remember your choice for future visits.

Data stored: Language preference only
Legal basis: This cookie is strictly necessary under Art. 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive, as it is required to provide the service you requested (viewing the website in your preferred language). No consent is required for this cookie. No other cookies are set by our website.

Form Submissions

When you submit forms on our website (such as suggesting new services, reporting issues, or contributing migration guides), we process this data to:

  • Create public GitHub issues for community review and collaboration
  • Improve our service recommendations
  • Respond to your suggestions or questions

Data collected: All information you provide in the form
Data transfer: Your form data is transferred to GitHub (Microsoft Corporation) and stored in our public repository
Legal basis: Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) in maintaining and improving our open-source service catalog through community contributions. We have balanced this against your rights and determined the impact is minimal because: (a) submissions are voluntary, (b) you control what information you include, and (c) GitHub issues are public by nature.

Important: Since GitHub issues are public, please do not include sensitive personal information in your submissions. Providing data through form submissions is entirely voluntary.

Newsletter Subscription

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect:

  • Your name
  • Email address
  • Language preference

This data is stored with Mailcoach (an EU-based email service provider) and used solely to send you updates about European digital service alternatives.

Legal basis: Your explicit consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR)
Withdrawal: You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email or by contacting us

Local Storage

We use your browser's local storage to save your progress through migration guides and tool preferences (such as KeepFocus timer settings). This data:

  • Remains only on your device
  • Contains no personal information
  • Helps you track your progress when switching between services
  • Can be cleared by deleting your browser data

User-Generated Content in Tools

When you use our tools (Plotty, Listy, Privnote, Quiz, Kanban), content is stored temporarily on our servers. For details on data processing roles, encryption, and retention for these tools, please refer to the Tool-Specific Terms and Data Processing Roles sections of our Terms of Service.

Your Right to Object

Where we process your data based on our legitimate interests, you have the right to object at any time for reasons relating to your particular situation. Upon receiving your objection, we will cease processing unless we demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests, rights, and freedoms. To object, contact us at hi@switch-to.eu.

How We Protect Your Data

  • Our serverless functions are configured to execute in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany). See Infrastructure and Hosting in our Terms of Service for details.
  • We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures
  • We follow the principle of data minimization — we only collect what we need
  • We regularly review our data processing practices

Data Retention

  • GitHub issues: Retained for as long as the Switch-to.eu project is actively maintained, as they form part of our public project record. We periodically review open issues and close or anonymize those that are no longer relevant. You may request deletion of your specific submission at any time.
  • Newsletter data: Retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion
  • Analytics data: Anonymous and aggregated, retained by Plausible according to their policy
  • Language preference: Stored until you clear cookies or change the setting
  • Tool content: Subject to automatic expiration as described in our Terms of Service

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services that may process data:

Service Provider Role Location Purpose
Plausible Analytics Plausible Insights OÜ Processor EU (Estonia) Anonymous website analytics
GitHub Microsoft Corporation Independent controller USA (EU-US Data Privacy Framework) Public issue tracking for form submissions
Mailcoach Spatie BV Processor EU (Belgium) Newsletter delivery and management

We have Data Processing Agreements in place with our processors. Each service has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data.

International Data Transfers

Our services involve transfers of data to the United States through the following providers:

  • GitHub (Microsoft Corporation): Form submissions are stored as public GitHub issues. Transfer is protected by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (DPF), under which Microsoft is a certified participant, and Standard Contractual Clauses (2021 SCCs).
  • Vercel (Vercel Inc.): Our website and tools are hosted on Vercel. While we configure our serverless functions to execute in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany — fra1 region), Vercel is a US-based company and certain processing (such as builds and deployment) occurs in the United States. Transfer is protected by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (DPF, certified June 2024) and Standard Contractual Clauses (2021 SCCs) as set out in Vercel's Data Processing Agreement.

You may obtain a copy of the relevant safeguards by contacting us at hi@switch-to.eu.

Automated Decision-Making

We do not use automated decision-making or profiling as defined in Art. 22 GDPR.

Your Rights Under GDPR

You have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access (Art. 15): Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Rectification (Art. 16): Request correction of inaccurate personal data
